The Grammar School of Vodňany goes back to the 1950s. The Ministry of Education established an eleven-year secondary school on 1st September 1954 and Tomáš Jebavý was appointed the headmaster of the school. Firstly, the school was divided into two parts – a nine-year primary school and a secondary school, which was cancelled some time later.
The modern history of the grammar school started in 1990s. The town councillors decided to renew the secondary tradition and opened an eight-year grammar school on 1st September 1992. In the beginning, the grammar school coexisted with one of Vodňany´s primary schools. After two years the grammar school separated from the primary school. PhDr. Martin Schacherl, Ph. D. became a new headmaster six years ago.
The school prepares its students for leaving exams and further study at universities. However, these are not the only activities provided by the school. There are out-of-school activities such as excursions to Great Britain, France and Italy. Moreover, the school has got partnerships with schools from Germany, Hungary and Slovenia. Every year a students´ celebration called May festival takes place. It’s become popular not only among students but also teachers.
The educational process of the grammar school reflects modern trends in teaching, which concentrates on subjects such as maths, information technology and foreign languages.
